I have the same problem with this advice that I do with just about every piece of ‘help’ floating on the internet. This concept that a woman wants this or that, or that a man is turned on by a specific thing, is ridiculous. Am I alone in thinking that I am not a cookie-cutter stereotype? Yes, if you are just meeting a person, or trying to do so, feel free to read this drivel and see if your girl will swoon from you making her balloon animals, or your guy will start panting because you dress up like a racoon. However, if you want a relationship, or are in one, try doing something miraculous…Close your laptop, and call/talk to the person. You then have the opportunity to learn what that person actually likes, what turns them on, what makes them happy, and what might be considered ‘magical’ for your relationship. I know, its harder than googling the mysteries of the universe, but is more worth the time and more likely to succeed.
I can understand your desire for gifts and attention that are more personalized to your own likes. However, some well-meaning guys try very hard to understand exactly what their girlfriend likes but still feel clueless when it comes to her idea of romance. It’s like trying to understand what the tight-end’s job is when you’re watching a football game. Since I would be totally outside my element, I would have to look up that info online. Well, romance is new for a lot of guys. Finding examples online can be a huge help, and MOST girls will appreciate their husband/boyfriend’s effort to make them feel special even if they had to rely on some traditional examples of romance to get their point across.

If some douchebag filled my house with balloons, or the cliche flowers deal, i would not be happy. BTW- i am very romantic, and i do not like getting flowers all the time, or jewelry. And your advice on not writing a poem unless you know your “good at it”SO WHAT- if a guy wrote somethingsweet for me, I dont care what it sounds like or if it isnt keats- its genuine. All in all- the worst advice i have ever heard for ways to make a relationship work well. Sure, if you want your life to read out like some hallmark-kay jewelers-1-800-flowers-diabetic-candle huffing cheezy lame-ass cliche, then go for it. For those of us that want something more, your going to get boring with these redundant by-the-book tactics. Try being yourself, and listening to what someone else really wants. Maybe your girlfriend would like to eat chinese food on the roof of the house while throwing water balloons at the neighbors cat. Maybe she would like to take a photography class with you and shoot nekkid pictures of you while you eat strawberries on a shag rug while you hold sparklers between your toes. You wont know what she wants unless you ask and stop listening to this junk.

Jane- your amazing. best response ever. I was thinking the same thing – Ipersonally think flowers gotta be the lamest “surprise” ever. Its nothing to go ‘ hey i want those’ and have em sent to someone. I think these suggestions were “general” in nature and not absolute. You have to find out what the other person likes. For instance I started dating a guy who sent me a romantic text message at 7:30 am every morning. Sounds nice right? Well he woke me up every single morning after I had been working all night until 3 am. His texts woke me up after only 3 or 4 hours of sleep – the equivalent of waking him up at 2 am. He got mad at me because I didn’t “appreciate” his romantic gestures! I had to block his number – the end.

It’s only magical if the gesture comes from the heart and is not done simply because they read an article on the internet. I also think that it shouldn’t always be about what the guy can do to make the woman feel special. Imagine how envious your guy’s co-workers would be if you had a bouquet of flowers delivered to HIM at work only in the middle of the bouquet there is two tickets on the 50 yard line at the next home game (but dont ruin it by insisting that he take you instead of his best friend).
